Direct drilling specialist Claydon recently launched its new Terra Star, a stubble cultivator that complements the Claydon Straw Harrow, and provide farmers with a simple, low-cost, low disturbance method of stubble and weed management.
Operating at 15km/h, it creates an ideal tilth which encourages volunteers and weeds, including blackgrass, to chit, while also assisting with drainage. With a working width of 6m, the TerraStar is equipped with two knife bars on each side and, as its name suggests, incorporates ‘star’ points which pluck divots from the top layer of soil to create a shallow cultivation effect.
Claydon suggest using the TerraStar behind a tractor with at least 110kW (150hp) to achieve the forward speed required for optimum results and put the machine’s hourly work rate at approximately 9ha. Operating depth can be adjusted to allow multiple passes in the field and a rear consolidation option will be available to achieve optimum results. Terra Star can be used as a mechanical weeder, with multiple passes reducing the need for glyphosate, as well as for stubble management and reducing slug populations.
At the moment there’s just one 6.11m version available which costs £15,000. An optional tined following harrow is also available
