Farmers and spray operators attending this year’s Cereals Event should visit the Water UK stand, the ‘one stop shop’ for pesticide stewardship, to find out how they can help reduce the instances of crop protection residues reaching water.
This year’s stand will see representatives from eight water companies coming together with the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group (MSG), Metazachlor Matters, and the Voluntary Initiative (VI) OSR Herbicides? Think Water stewardship campaign.
“Pesticide stewardship is at the heart of the stand,” explains Dinah Hillier, Thames Water catchment control manager. “We’ve invited the VI to join us this year with the view of trying to create a ‘one stop shop’ for farmers and spray operators, in terms of representing the key pesticide stewardship groups for water,” she adds.
“It’s all about collaboration and we’re as keen as ever to work with the agricultural sector to reduce the risk of water supplies breaching statutory drinking water quality standards, while protecting the availability of key pesticides.”
A visit to the Water UK stand is a chance to speak direct to the water companies.
“Water company representatives will be on hand to explain the range of issues they’re facing and how they’re working closely with farmers in their specific water catchments. It’s about developing relationships that can be taken forward in the best possible way,” explains Dr. Hillier.
“Another reason to come onto the stand is the opportunity to gain BASIS and/or NRoSO points by following this year’s ‘Slug Trail’, which will be running between the Water UK, Certis and De Sangosse stands.
“The trail requires participants to answer questions to update their knowledge of slug pellet stewardship practices.”
Also on display will be a high precision pelleter with GPS technology, highlighting the importance of regular calibration and testing, as well as the opportunity to take part in some ferric phosphate slug pellet research to help water companies inform their communications with farmers.
Water UK can be found at stand 407 at Cereals on June 14 and 15.
